We, the British Tractor Challenge committee have decided to organise another attempt at the Guinness World Record for the most working tractors in one field at the same time. This will be one of the most spectacular agricultural achievements anywhere in the world.
A brief history of the record, in April 1999 at Sandstone Estates in South Africa, they organized a "Great 100 Working" they achieved 109 tractors to set the first Guinness World Record for the most tractors working at any one time.
In April 2001 at Yass the farm machinery club of Australia took the record to 298 tractors.
Not to be out done South Africa planned for a Great 400 Working. At this point we started to get interested and planned for 500 tractors working. Meanwhile, in South Africa on April 20th 2002, they managed to break the record with 755 tractors.
We heard that John Hanlon from Ireland was organizing a Great 800 Working, we traveled to Cooley in Ireland to see there attempt on the 4th August 2002, and what a sight that was, they smashed the record with a staggering 1832 tractors.
We organized an attempt on the record on the 23rd August 2003, we had 771 tractors take part, so we did not beat the record, but it was such a successful weekend that even eighteen months after people are still talking about it, and we raised £9,300 for our two charities.
In April 2004 we traveled to Australia, and on Sunday the 11th April at Cootamundra the record was broken again with 1901 tractors.
We are planning to have 2006 working tractors all working in the same field at the same time, on 24/25th June 2006. We have been donated a tractor by Tractor And Machinery magazine to raffle, to raise money to help finance this event, and we plan to have a second tractor to draw for the entrants that take part. Our chosen charities are The Wiltshire Air Ambulance and The Welsh Air Ambulance. We are having a launch at the Tractor World at Malvern on 5/6 March, 2005 and will be attending major rallies and shows in the coming months leading up to the event.
